Official sources said that some 45 officials who were serving during this decade in various posts were involved in the scam. It was found that the misused funds were given as kickbacks to executive engineers, deputy engineers and assistant engineer in the department. The Telangana government, which has taken a serious note of the irregularities, wants to throw the book at the accused, so that such irregularities are not repeated.
Interestingly, in 95 villages, revenue development officers, mandal parishad development officers and tahsildars are involved in the irregularities. In 25 cases, bills of three to four houses have been drawn on one name. Leaders of various political parties and MLAs recommended houses to the people in the district. The investigators found that 30 per cent of such recommendations were made to the persons who already owned pucca houses.
An official, on condition of anonymity, said that the report will create a sensation if the government takes action against the guilty. "The only bright point to Khammam district is that the scale of irregularities here is lesser than in other districts of Telangana state," the official of the housing department said.
