Hyderabad: The police foiled the attempt of a woman who was allegedly trying to sell her seven-month-old son and rescued the child. She took the step apparently due to extreme poverty, officials said.
The incident occurred at Macha Bollarun in Alwal on Sunday morning. Alwal police said that following an alert from locals that a woman was attempting to sell her baby for Rs 1 lakh, they reached the spot and rescued the child named Chinna.
The woman, Shailaja, 26, is the wife of Rakesh who works in a hotel. The couple stays at Malkajgiri. “By the time we reached there was a crowd. She was looking for customers who could buy the child for Rs 1 lakh. We immediately stopped her. She said that she tried to sell the baby due to poverty,” said SI B. Rambabu.
Police officials said the couple married about four years ago and had two kids, but they had died. Rakesh’s income wasn’t enough for the family. “She said she didn’t want to lose the child due to poverty and his upbringing was too difficult for them. She wanted to sell him to people who were well off and expected a little money,” the SI said.
Cops said nobody has been arrested in this connection and that a probe is on. The child was handed over to officials of the Women Development and Child Welfare (WD and CW) Department.
