Six people commit suicide, 10 suffer heart attack following Jaya's conviction
Subramanian, 70, died after consuming poison when he came to know about the verdict
Chennai: As many as six persons, including a 70-year-old man in Sivagangai and a 19-year-old college girl, allegedly committed suicide in the state since Saturday evening as they were in a state of sorrow after hearing the court verdict convicting AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.
“Apart from these instances, two persons, including a 17-year-old plus-two student, Nagalakshmi, in Madurai and a man in Cuddalore set themselves on fire to kill themselves out of sorrow,” the police said. According to the police, one each from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tirunelveli, Sivagangai, Tiruchy and Erode had committed suicide after hearing the news about Jayalalithaa.
In Sivagangai district, Subramanian, 70, died after he consumed poison on Saturday when he came to know about the verdict. “He was an AIADMK sympathiser,” the police said. In Tiruchy, a degree student identified as A. Jhonsha killed herself by hanging. In Chennai, Venkitesan, an electrician from Virugambakkam who set himself on fire on Saturday evening, died in the hospital. At Kuruvimalai village in Kancheepuram, A.N. Babu, 50, an AIADMK functionary, hanged himself. At Tirunelveli, a 48-year-old AIADMK worker killed himself by jumping in front of a speeding bus.
In Erode, a weaver named Lakshmanan killed himself.
