Mumbai: Just a few days after breaking his party’s alliance with the BJP in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray announced that he would withdraw support to its old ally at the Centre as well.

He said the Sena’s representative at the Centre, heavy industries minister Anant Geete, would resign from the government after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns home from the United States. The 25-year-long Sena-BJP alliance ended last week, just ahead of the October 15 Assembly polls.

“Geete will submit his resignation after PM Modi returns from the US,” Mr Thackeray told reporters on Monday.

It was expected that Mr Thackeray would take the step last week when the alliance came apart, but he didn’t even refer to it while launching his party’s poll campaign on Saturday. He had attacked the BJP  that day, but did not say anything about withdrawing support at the Centre.
