HyderabadIn the last two months three pedigree dogs have gone missing in the Kundan Bagh area of Begumpet. Similar incidents have been reported from Sainikpuri, Shanthi Nagar in Masab Tank and Padma Rao Nagar in Secunderabad.

Residents’ associations say that a gang is keeping an eye for expensive dogs. They kidnap them for breeding or sell them. An oral complaint was also made at the Begumpet PS regarding a missing dog.

Many owners do not accompany their dogs during walks. Ms Manju Vikram, a resident of Methodist Colony, Begumpet, whose 4-year-old mixed breed dog went missing in August said, “We used to let Mickey (the dog) out when required and he would return home.

In August he went missing. We made an oral complaint. We found that a Pug and a Labrador puppy had also gone missing. GHMC workers stated that some youths fraternalise with dogs and then take them.”

In another incident on Necklace Road, men in an Omni car were stopped by an owner when they tried to lure his puppies. On September 13, a German Sheppard named Jimmy went missing from Masab Tank (Vijay Nagar Colony). On August 20, a male Pug (Scooby) went missing from the Kukatpally area.

Ms Padmaja Bundla, who owns Caring for Animals shelters said, “This happens when the dogs are left alone. They are kidnapped and taken outside Hyderabad or state.  Owners must insert micro-chips on their dogs to check this.”

As per IPC the owner can file a complaint for any dog costing more than Rs 50 at the local police station and an FIR should be issued. Unfortunately, less than 10 per cent of missing dogs reunite with the family. The others suffer terrible grief, depression and diseases before death.
