Hyderabad: The much-awaited Begumpet to Balkampet link road will finally be open to traffic on Friday. The Rs 45-crore link road of 1.41 km length, which had started in 2007 has been completed after seven long years. GHMC officials said it was a challenging task to create a road, covering a huge area of about 30,000 sqm. (7.5 acres), in the central business district of the city with three bridges, including a road-under-bridge.

Somesh Kumar, GHMC commissioner said there was stiff resistance from property owners to land acquisition, delay in shifting of utilities like electrical towers, HT lines and LT lines, water supply as well as sewerage lines. There was also a delay in grounding and completion of the RUB by the Railways.

The link road is said to reduce travel distance by two km. for traffic from Kukatpally, Balanagar, Fathenagar and Balkampet towards Secunderabad. It will benefit the residents of Brahmanvadi, Begumpet, Nature Cure MMTS Station, Indira Gandhi Puram and Renuka Nagar, and it will provide connectivity to Balkampet, Brindavan Colony and Fathenagar.  Apart from this, the road will also reduce traffic congestion on NH-9 from Ameerpet to Sanathnagar/Kukatpally and traffic on Begumpet ROB by 20 per cent.

The connecting road will reduce traffic congestion on the section of SP Road from Rajiv Circle to Green Land flyover. About 60,000 vehicles are expected to use the road daily in the future,” added the GHMC commissioner.
