Hyderabad: Ten days after he was kidnapped from Chandrayangutta 10-year-old Y. Karunakar was found murdered at a deserted place in Meerpet on Saturday. Police found that two people from his neighbourhood had abducted the boy and strangled him to death.

Though there were no ransom calls initially, the gang called his parents two days ago and asked for Rs 2 lakh. However, the parents thought the police will find their kid. The police says that they have identified the killers and have taken one of them into custody. Karunakar was kidnapped on September 22.

Meanwhile, the main culprit named Mallik-arjun, 22, a mason, who is now in custody, had misled the police on the day of kidnapping. “Mallikarjun is suspected have kidnapped and killed the boy with the help of his friend. However, on the day the boy went missing he said that he had seen the boy going on a bike with a stranger. It now appears that he had mislead the police,” said an official.

Police said the abductors had killed the boy before making the ransom call. The police is confused on why they killed the boy. The cops think the gang must have panicked hearing about police involvement.

Officials said the abductors took the kid to a jungle in Meerpet and strangled him. "The abductors must have thought the police were behind him, and they wanted to get rid of the boy. They killed him after two days. However, they made the ransom call asking for Rs 2 lakh day before yesterday," said Falaknuma ACP Mohammed Abdul Bari.

On September 22 Karunakar had gone to drop his younger sister and brother at the Mother Mary School in Indira Nagar at around 8.30 am. He did not return till afternoon and his mother Umarani and relatives started searching for him. In the evening Umarani got a call from an unknown phone number. "The abductor said that her son was with him. But, when she asked why he kidnapped the boy, he hung up," Chandrayangutta Inspector N. Rama Rao said. When police traced the number, it was found to be from a coin box phone in Chandrayangutta.

The police is now tracing the second phone from which the ransom call came two days ago. "The call came from a mobile phone. However, it appears that the SIM was purchased with a false address," said an official. The police is now interrogating the suspect to find out the motive for the killing and other facts.
