Hyderabad: Power supply in Telangana remains precarious and the two discoms are imposing scheduled cuts of up to eight hours along with night cuts to cope with the 800 MW shortfall in power supply.

Against a demand of 6,200 MW in the state, only 5,400 MW of power is available. Also 300 MW of load shedding is being resorted to at night in the state to deal with the shortage while GHMC areas are accounting for 250 MW of load relief.

The situation is likely to improve slightly only after the Kharif season, when power demand from the agriculture sector eases in the next 15 days, but it might not result in the rollback of scheduled cuts.

The precarious power situation in Telangana is likely to continue for 15 to 20 days at the least. “We are supplying 4,500 MW of power in the state including the scheduled load relief, against a demand of 6,200 MW. The load relief, excluding the industrial sector is to the tune of 800 MW, which includes load relied during day and night. There are no emergency cuts enforced apart from the load relief,” said CMD of TSSPDCL, G. Raghuma Reddy.

Officials, meanwhile, are trying to purchase power from lateral sources to narrow the huge gap. As of now the towns and districts are bearing load relief to the tune of 100 MW apart from 250 MW to the industrial sector. The power deficit has been hovering around 17 to 18 MU per day through the last week and hydel generation is close to 9 MU per day only.

Currently, areas within the GHMC limits are putting up with four hour cuts, district headquarters are having five hours cuts, towns six hours cuts, mandal headquarters eight hour cuts, while the industrial sector is on a one day power holiday a week.
