KR market garbage cleared within one hour
BBMP sources said garbage in KR Market was cleared in a hurry following instructions from the Mayor
Bengaluru: Although Monday was a government holiday, it was a tiring day for BBMP officials, especially for the zonal joint commissioner and engineers connected with the clearing of garbage.
Mayor Shantakumari had instructed the joint commissioners, chief engineers, assistant engineers and assistant executive engineers of all the eight zones to be present for garbage clearance. And the result of the extra work hours could be seen within one hour. On Monday morning mounds of garbage accumulated, due to the series of festivals like Dasara and Bakri id. Even three days after Dasara, garbage was seen all around.
Annoyed by the sight of mounds of garbage in K.R Market, the Mayor took the officials to task and directed them to clear the garbage within a span of one hour.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Ms Kumari revealed that garbage was not cleared in the city’s busiest market for the last three days, which had increased the piles of rubbish strewn around .
“Since it rained very heavily last evening, the situation worsened. Rain water mixed with garbage flowed on to the road, hampering traffic movement. The officials, who were present at the market, said garbage clearance was difficult when it rains. By Tuesday, we should be able to clear garbage in some of the prominent areas like K.R Market, Gandhi Bazar, Shivajinagar and surrounding areas,” she said.
BBMP sources said that most of the garbage at K.R Market was cleared within one hour following her instructions. According to sources, the Mayor along with the BBMP commissioner M. Lakshminarayan visited K.R Market and gave instructions to clear the garbage immediately. Then she went on an inspection to Russell Market.
“By the time she returned, most of the garbage in K.R Market was cleared,” the official said. The mayor also visited some areas in South and Dasarahalli zones to monitor garbage clearance. The BBMP said that nearly 300 tonnes of excess garbage were generated in just two days.
