Tamil Nadu girl washed away in Bengaluru drain
The girl, on vacation in Bengaluru, fell into the drain while walking in Bilekahalli and was washed away
Chennai / Bengaluru: An eight-year-old girl from Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu who went on a vacation in Bengaluru was washed away in a drain in the garden city on Monday night. The girl, Geetha, was walking with her aunt Lakshmi (father Shankar’s sister) in the heavy rain on Bannerghatta Road, Bilekahalli, southeast Bangalore, when she slipped into the drain through a gap in the slabs covering the drain.
The fire and rescue team which began the search at around 8.30 pm, half an hour after the incident, could not trace the body of the girl who was in Bengaluru for pooja holidays.
The incident happened between Jaya Deva hospital flyover and IIM-Bangalore stretch of Bannerghatta Road, the police said.
Local residents said that the slabs had been removed as the pavement was being relaid and the drain was being desilted, but the area was not barricaded.
The child was holding Lakshmi’s hand when she stepped into an opening and was sucked into the drain.
Lakshmi, who was on her mobile, raised an alarm. Fire department had conducted searches after removing the slabs for nearly one km
The drain led to Agara lake, where the search continued on Tuesday.
