Chennai: In his first assault against AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa after the latter’s conviction in a DA case, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday said the AIADMK chief’s hopes of coming out clean in the case was a mere ‘dream’ and it will not materialise.

Chairing DMK district secretaries meeting at Anna Arivalayam to chalk out the party’s strategies to launch an offensive against the AIADMK, Karunanidhi said, “If she (Jayalalithaa) plans to escape the case after stealing so many crores, return to power and fool the people of TN, it will not happen. It is only a dream. It will not fructify.”

Appealing to the district secretaries to work towards ‘undoing’ Jayalalithaa’s ‘dream’, Karunanidhi who elicited views of the all party district heads advised his lieutenants to organise street, village and district-level meetings and distribute pamphlets explaining the DA case to the people.

One of the two resolutions adopted at the meeting sought Centre’s immediate intervention to end an “undeclared emergency-like” situation in TN. “Tamil Nadu is being forced into an undeclared emergency with the AIADMK men unleashing a regime of violence,” the resolution said, coming down heavily on AIADMK for the serial “release Amma” protests it had organised since Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the DA case on September 27.

Police were not in a position to control the situation and also were aiding the ruling party, the resolution said. There was a complete breakdown of constitutional machinery, and if this situation were allowed to continue, law and order would deteriorate beyond control and would hugely affect public peace. Another resolution condemned the AIADMK’s criticism of Judge John Michael Cunha for his verdict.
