New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana State on a petition filed by Andhra Pradesh seeking directions to the Union government not to notify the award of the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal on distribution of Krishna river waters. A Supreme Court bench ordered issuance of notice to the three states while giving them eight-week time to reply to the notices.
The notice came on a special leave petition seeking the review of the award passed by the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal on the sharing of Krishna waters among the three states. The undivided Andhra Pradesh government had filed the SLP.
The SC had, in August, allowed Telangana government to be a party in the ongoing petition filed by Maharashtra seeking the Union government to notify the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal Award. Telangana state has contended that it contributes to part of Krishna river catchments and hence has the right to have their own share in the waters.
Maharashtra government had filed a petition seeking the Union government to formally issue a gazette notification on the final award passed by Brijesh Kumar Tribunal in 2013 for its implementation. There are already three petitions pending before the Apex court in this matter including the one filed by the undivided AP government. Telangana state has contended that it contributes to part of Krishna river catchments and hence has the right to have their own share in the waters.
