KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) authorities will soon start resurfacing 24 roads in the city and outskirts, including arterial roads. The Rs 31 crore project, to be funded by both KMRL and the State Government, includes widening and strengthening roads and improving the junction. Initially, the alternative roads through which the traffic is now being diverted, to facilitate Metro Rail works, will be repaired. Due to increased vehicle density, most of these alternative roads have been damaged, resulting in regular traffic congestion.

The KMRL authorities have identified 24 roads in the city and will soon initiate the tender proceedings to award the contract for the work. A recent board meeting of the KMRL has also approved the proposal for improving and strengthening the city roads. The major roads that will be strengthened by the Metro agency are Janatha Road (SA road to Thykoodam under pass), Mamangalam – Pottakuzhi Road, Kaloor-Perandoor Road, KP Vallon Road and Mullassery Canal Road.

“In an effort to ensure maximum durability and quality, repair works will be carried out by professional agencies like Kerala State Construction Corp-oration and other Government agencies,” said sources at KMRL.

Meanwhile, the public protest is mounting over the delay in completing the emergency road repair works to be done by the Metro agencies.

“The Metro agencies are not keen on repairing the damaged roads along the Metro corridor, despite the ultimatum given by High Court and District Collector. It is the contractor agencies who have to repair roads that were damaged due to Metro construction works,” alleged members of the corporation council.
