Andhra Pradesh ‘powered’ to brave Cyclone Hudhud

Hyderabad: AP power utilities are bracing for Cyclone Hudhud, expected to cross the AP coast with full force, by readying special centralised break-down teams to take up restoration works immediately.

Employees have been asked not to take any leave during the cyclone period. Moreover, emergency personnel have been equipped with walky-talkies and wireless sets for communication to handle any emergency situation that might arise.

People too have been alerted not to go near electrical installations during the cyclone.

“Keeping in view the precautionary instructions received from Southern Regional Load Dispatch Center (SRLDC), Bengaluru, power utilities are alert and ready to meet the emergency works with regard to power supply and power restoration, particularly in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, West and East Godavari etc., under the purview of Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd.,” a press release said.

The energy department has prepared and submitted a report on the likely impact of the expected cyclone on power systems such as generating stations, substations, transmission and distribution lines and possible load reduction.

Experienced engineers have been  deployed to the cyclone affected areas. Diesel generator sets have been kept ready in all the 400KV and 220KV substations along the coastal lines.

Panic buying was noticed in the city on Saturday as people did their best to stock up on essential commodities so as to tide over the worst Cyclone Hudhud may bring.
From vegetables and instant noodles to torches, candles and medicines, city folks prepared themselves in every way for Hudhud and its aftermath.

Rythu Bazaars also witnessed heavy rush due to panic buying. However, city folks need not panic about availability of vegetables in the city if anything goes awry. An official from a Rythu Bazaar said, “In view of Cyclone Hudhud, Rythu Bazaars in the city have stocked 50 per cent more quantity of vegetables, mainly onions, potatoes and tomatoes.”
