HyderabadTelangana government has devised a one-of-its-kind curriculum and textbooks for ‘ethics and values’ education in state board schools.

Specific curriculam for the subject are currently in force mostly in BJP-ruled states like Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. However, the meticulously planned curriculum, which has different aspects of 18 values taught through Classes I to X, has invited the interest of even the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT).

A simpler version will also be introduced in Andhra Pradesh. The government has asked officials to begin the printing of the books at the district level, and are to be used from this academic year.

‘Morals and ethics’ is already a subject in the state board syllabus, but without a fixed curriculum like other subjects as science or mathematics. But now, a curriculum has been devised by a committee of experts from the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). Students will be taught about 18 values like personal hygiene, freedom, patriotism etc.

Throughout their ten years of study. In each grade, a different aspect about every value will be taught. For instance, the Class VII textbook has constitutional aspects of freedom.

The books are to be used for study from this academic year, though almost half the year is already past. “Instructions have been issued to all district education officials to get the books printed and made accessible to schools,” a senior official said.

Translations in English and Urdu, with some more content additions, will also be made available shortly, officials said.

The detailed texts also seem to have invited the Centre’s interest. “Such detailed textbooks on morals and ethics have never been prepared, not even in states like Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. Even the NCERT has asked for the text,” an official of the SCERT and one of the authors said.
