ALAPPUZHA: It’s been six months since a boy, aged 12, escaped from Mayithara Children’s Home, near Cherthala, run by the Social Welfare Board.
According to K. Vikraman, Sub Inspector, Arthungal police, one of the two boys who ran away on April 28 was traced and brought back to the home. “Another boy remains untraced. The police has filed an FIR on the basis of a complaint. But we have no clues as yet”, he said.
Adv M.K. Abdhul Samad, member of District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) said those who show a tendency to run away have actually no home to go to. “For instance, the parents of Santhosh parted long ago. While his father lives in a lodge in Cherthala, his mother is a housemaid in Oachira. Such incidents in a child’s life are unsettling”, he said. The committee has given strict orders to the management of the children’s home to be more vigilant and take stringent measures to avert further escapes”, the CWC member said.
There are altogether 26 boys living in the home, the main aftercare home in the district. The home, where 35 children can be accommodated, started functioning in 2008. It was set up to rehabilitate destitute children and those facing threats to their lives in various forms.
