Cairo: At least 30 people were killed and 15 others injured on Monday in Egypt after three buses collided on a desert road, a security source said.

A number of 25 ambulances are now working on transferring the bodies as well as injured people to the near by hospital and morgue, an official in Aswan Ambulance service said.

The incident took place on the Aswan Cairo Desert road, 10 kilometers away from the gate of Edfu city, which is located on the west bank of the Nile River between Esna and Aswan cities.

Egypt has one of the world's highest traffic accident rates due to careless driving, and road and vehicle conditions, which lead to thousands of deaths and injuries every year.

A recent report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said there were 15,578 car accidents in Egypt in 2013, up 0.4% from the year before, which claimed the lives of 6,716 people and injured 22,411 others.
