KARIMNAGAR: An 18-year old girl attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze after pouring kerosene over her body in Chalgal village on Sunday allegedly due to her classmate’s romance linked harassment. Her condition is critical.  Police registered a case against the culprit Chennamalla Ravi and his friends.

Jagtial Rural SI C. Saida Rao said that Simran Begum, a degree first year student of Jagtial Degree College, attempted suicide as she was unable to bear the harassment of Ravi. She was not attending classes due to Ravi’s harassment.

Ravi took the help of two friends, one Arun and Shravan, who in turn relied upon two women neighbours of the girl. They exerted pressure on Simran to marry Ravi when she was alone at her house.

Ravi and his friends fled when the parents of the girl came there. Some of them were caught by villagers and handed over to police.

The victim sustained 70 per cent burns. Jagtial II Additional Magistrate Ramesh recorded her statement at hospital. When contacted, an investigating official said the main culprits were still at large. Four teams were formed to nab them.
