CoimbatoreMembers of Hindu Makkal Katchi-Tamilagam petitioned collector Archana Patnaik on Monday seeking closure of Tasmac outlets on the day of Deepavali.

"The government has fixed a target for increasing liquor sales during this festival season causing concern among the Hindus. The liquor shops should be closed on Deepavali. Total prohibition should also be enforced in TN," said V.V. Manikkam, district president of the outfit.

In a similar petition, members of Eagle Eyes Welfare Association from Madukkarai sought closure of a Tasmac outlet coming up near a bypass road.

"Educational institutions like schools and colleges are located near the place proposed for the liquor shop. Students go by the way and there is also a bus stop located nearby. Hence the outlet should be shifted elsewhere away from the residential locality," said J. Johnson, president of the association.
