Nagavali river triggers alarm

Srikakulam: Flood levels are reaching alarming levels in Nagavali river following  heavy rains in Rayagada area of Odisha with outflows from Thotapalli and Madduvalasa reservoirs.

Flood water level reached 1,58,000 cusecs in Nagavali at Old Bridge in Srikakulam town by 7 pm.  Heavy rains and increased inflows in Thotapalli, Madduvalasa reservoirs are the reasons for the rise in water levels in Nagavali river said irrigation superintending engineer Sanapala Venkata Ramana.  

Nagavali flood waters likely to affect 107 villages in 10 mandals in the district from Vangara to Srikakulam rural including towns. Concerned officials have been informed, said irrigation EE, Bora Ravindra.

“In 2006, water levels had touched record levels in Nagavali at 2.30 lakh cusecs, this time we are expecting it to touch  two lakh cusecs. 

Police and  revenue officials have been deployed in  Nagavali and  adjacent villages along with NDRF teams and have started shifting people from Boddavala in Regidi, Koppara, Geethanapalli, B.S.Palli in Vangara, Allena, K.Kandyam in Burja mandals and Mahalaxminagar, Adivarampeta, Hayathinagar, Manguvarithota areas in Srikakulam town,” he said.

Flood water levels  showed rising trends in Mahendratanaya river due to heavy rains in its catchment area at Parlakimidi, Mahendra hills in Odisha on Sunday and Monday. One unidentified person was reported to have drowned in the river near Pathapatnam.

Vehicular  traffic was stopped by police on Mahendratanaya  Road Bridge (Sneha Varadhi) between Pathapatnam of AP and Parlakimidi  in  Odisha.   As a result of the rising waters in Mahendratanaya the inflows have  increased in Vamsadhara river at Gotta barrage.
