EC is awaiting notification from the assembly secretary over the vacancy in Srirangam constituency

Chennai: The Election Commission is awaiting notification from the Tamil Nadu assembly secretary over the vacancy in Srirangam constituency.

To a query on the status of the Srirangam constituency, where the vacancy of an MLA arose post Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the disproportionate assets case,  chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar on Tuesday said the assembly secretary had not yet notified the vacancy.

As per election norms,  poll should be conducted within six months of the vacancy and they would conduct the polls within the stipulated time. However, the Election Commission of India had been briefed about the current scenario related to the Srirangam constituency that voted AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa as MLA.

Those above 18 years and intending to add their names in the draft rolls can apply between October 15 and November 10 this year and their names will appear in the final rolls to be released by January, the chief electoral officer pointed out.

The electoral draft would be published on Wednesday in all districts in the designated locations and also be hosted on the Election Commission’s website, the CEO told a press conference at the secretariat. He also demanded that the voters look into the draft for any omissions or corrections.

Electors can also send an SMS to 94441 23456 with their EPIC number to find out in which constituency they had a vote. A total of 65,648 persons were added as part of the draft electoral revision and another 10,389 names were deleted. With this revision, the state’s total number of electors is 5.58 crore as on date, including 2.4 crore women voters and 3127 transgenders, he said.
