Erode: Ten years after the killing of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan posters have appeared all over Erode district praising the bandit as a "hero who protected the inter-state border".
Veerappan, who reigned over the jungles of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for over two decades, was finally gunned down in an encounter by the Special Task Force on October 18, 2004. On the eve of his 10th death anniversary, the Naam Tamizhar Katchi has plastered the public walls across Erode district with posters hailing Veerappan.
