Boats carrying illegal sand raided
RajahmundryAs many as 21 boats carrying sand quarried illegally on Godavari bed at Kateru village were seized on Friday. Sub Collector V. Vijayarama Raju said  that based on a tip off that several fishing boats were ready for transport of sand extracted illegally at Kateru village, they raided the area and seized them. 
 
Speaking on the occasion, he said that though the boats were permitted only for carrying out fishing in the river, they were fitted with motors illegally and they were also being used to transport sand flouting the norms. He said that they had collected the names of the boat owners and fine would be imposed on them.
 
The Sub Collector warned stern action against those  involved in quarrying of sand, storage, transport and sale illegally. Mining assistant director K. Subba Rao said that so far penalty to the tune of  Rs 45 lakh were collected from the owners of the lorries and tractors involved in  the illegal transport of sand.
