New Delhi: Amid furore over racial attacks against people from Northeast, a 27-year-old Mizoram girl was allegedly murdered at her house in south Delhi’s Munirka area on Thursday night. The police has detained at least half-a-dozen persons, including victim’s live-in partner, in connection with the incident.
This incident comes two days after three people from Nagaland were threatened and thrashed by a group of seven people in Gurgaon triggering concerns over safety of residents belonging to northeastern region in the NCR.
The call about Thursday’s mishap was received at about 11 pm from the Safdarjung hospital. A Delhi police press note stated that the hospital authorities informed the cops that a 27-year-old girl from Mizoram was brought dead to the hospital by her close friend Virender Singh.
“The victim was identified as Juliet Zonunmawi, a native of Aizawl in Mizoram who worked in a call center in Gurgaon and had been staying in a rented accommodation in Munirka village for the past few months,” said the press note.
A team from Vasant Vihar police station reached the hospital and another was sent to the spot. CFSL and CBI teams lifted the samples from the house after which the property was sealed, added the note.
The police sources said that the victim had sustained head injuries and stab wounds in her abdomen and thighs. Bloodstains of footwear were found on the stairs in her room and stairs as well.
Initial investigations have revealed that a party had been organised in the house on Thursday night during which the incident took place.
“We have detained all persons present in the party, including Virender, and are questioning them in connection with the incident,” said the police.
The police added that a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station and a medical board for conduction of autopsy was constituted. The police is waiting for family members to arrive after which the autopsy will be conducted,” added the police.
Investigating officials added that further action will be taken on the basis of the autopsy results and questioning of the detained persons. “We are not ruling out involvement of anyone in the incident and have all suspects in our custody,” added the investigating officials. The family is expected to reach capital by Saturday.
The Gurgaon Police on Friday claimed to have arrested three of the five perpetrators of the racial attack on three youths from Nagaland. Nazneen Bhasin, DCP Gurgaon East, claimed that the main accused in the case was caught in a very short span of time. Ms Bhasin also confirmed racial bias in the attack and added: “The accused were inebriated and violent. Ethnic racial element was present in the attack.”
The three Naga youth were thrashed in Gurgaon’s Sikanderpur village by a group of locals after they allegedly refused to share drinks with the attackers on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, after Thursday night incident, people belonging to northeastern community gathered outside Vasant Vihar police station and protested against the growing attacks them. They demanded immediate arrest in the incident.
