Coimbatore: Deepavali appeared to have arrived four days early in Tamil Nadu as AIADMK cadres erupted in delirious celebrations after the Supreme Court granted bail to former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.
AIADMK cadres, who have been wearing black shirts to protest her conviction, flung off the black clothes and broke into a jig on the streets of Coimbatore. Cheers replaced tears and fireworks and crackers lit up the streets.
On Friday morning, hundreds of AIADMK cadres, including MLAs and mayor P. Rajkumar, were present in the AIADMK party office in the city to watch the live telecast of Ms Jayalalithaa’s bail hearing in the Supreme Court.
Once the TV channels relayed the news that the court had granted bail to Ms Jayalalithaa, the party workers started to celebrate by distributing sweets and chocolates to the public in Coimbatore.
Around 12.30 pm, hundreds of party workers set their black shirts on fire. The AIADMK women danced in front of the party office and distributed sweets. Coimbatore mayor Rajkumar burst a 10,000 wala cracker in front of the party office and declared, “Today is our Deepavali.” There were similar celebrations by AIADMK members in Pollachi, Udumalpet, Tirupur and Valparai.
