Visakhapatnam: The beautiful coastline of Vizag has  changed  significantly after the  astronomical tides and winds of the recent cyclone. RK Beach and other beaches look pathetic  with huge ups and downs posing threat to tourists and city population. Beaches are prone to bear the brunt  of  cyclonic effects in terms of coastal geomorphology.  Beach slopes, deposition of sand, their volume, and other impacts change their profile and sometimes turn into dangerous spots for tourists who fail to identify the vulnerable areas.

RK Beach, Rushikonda beach, Bheemili beach and Yarada beach have changed dramatically after the recent cyclone Hudhud and the National Institute of Oceanography is conducting investigations on the spectacular variations before and after the disaster.Even after seven days, tidal force has been  strong and waves are  touching  structures close to the coast. Some places have witnessed huge erosion of sand deposits and the scenario has significantly changed.

“We have collected samples from RK Beach and some other places before and after the cyclone to observe the changes owing to the disastrous effect. It was basically found that there were depositions of old sand. Still, waves are aggressive touching the coast and will  takes time to restore normalcy.

Some places may have dangerous bays or sudden slopes where innocent people are prone to drowning,” said Dr V.S.N. Murthy, chief scientist, National Institute of Oceanography, Visakhapatnam centre. He said they were analysing the samples collected from  the beaches and will  observe the impact of cyclone on the beaches. Restoration work of the damaged beaches of  RK Beach and coasts close to Kursura Submarine and other areas are yet to begin.
