Chennai: On Friday, the airport police arrested a 28-year-old man for stealing a car from the parking lot of Chennai airport a week ago. The accused, Michael (28), landed in the police net after he was planning a similar attempt at the airport on Friday. Michael was initially picked up when he was seen threatening a vendor on G.S.T. road, near the airport. During investigations, the police found that he was a car thief.

A native of Krishnamalai in Tiruvannamalai district, Michael was arrested by the Villupuram police for his suspected involvement in a double-murder in the district a year ago, the police added. He was let out on bail recently and was staying in Chennai when he got in touch with an acquaintance, Venkatesan (30), who owns and drives a cab.

Michael approached Venkatesan, asking him to pick up a friend from the domestic airport on October 18.
After waiting for more than two hours at the terminal, Venkatesan was informed by Michael that the passenger had missed the flight and his services would be needed the next day.
However, a shock was in store for Venkatesan as his car was missing from the parking lot. Subsequent investigations by the airport police revealed that Michael had stolen the car.

“Footage from CCTV cameras showed a man slipping into the car and driving it away. The complainant identified the person as Michael. Venkatesan had kept the parking token near the steering wheel which made Michael’s job easier,” a police official said.Efforts to reach Michael’s mobile phone went futile and he went absconding to surface only on Friday for a repeat job.
