Chennai: Two private buses collided head-on on East Coast Road (ECR) near Cuddalore, leaving 82 passengers on board injured on Saturday morning. The accident occurred at Karaikadu around 9.30 am when a private bus, plying to Chidambaram from Cuddalore (TVM travels) ran amok and collided with another bus going to Cuddalore town (CTP travels).
“Four children and 40 women were among those injured in the accident.

Thankfully, most of them suffered only minor injuries. Twelve passengers suffered grievous injuries and all of them are out of danger,” said Cuddalore DSP M. Ramamoorthy.
Investigations revealed that the driver of TVM travels, Pazhanivel (48) of Devanampattinam, was overspeeding when he lost control of the vehicle as it was raining at the time. Noticing the vehicle running haphazardly, driver Anandaraj of the other bus swerved to avoid it. In spite of this, Pazhanivel rammed into the other vehicle, the Cuddalore police said.

All occupants, including the drivers and conductors of both buses, were injured. Even before the police and ambulance reached the spot, locals pitched in with the rescue operations and helped the occupants.

All available ambulance services in and around the area rushed to the spot along with the police and the injured were moved to the Cuddalore government hospital. Later, two dozen of them were referred to private hospitals in Puducherry and Cuddalore for further treatment.
