Guntur: Access to five villages that are being inundated due to storage of water in the Pulichintala multipurpose irrigation project has been cut off.

Water levels in the Pulichintala reservoir reached to 10.30 tmc ft on Saturday and Pulichintala, Kolluru, Bodhanam, Chityala Tanda, Gollapeta and Chityala villages are now being inundated.

People of these villages are taking shelter on nearby hills and in the forest due to inundation.

Revenue officials led by tahsidlar K. Lakshmiprasad from Bellamkonda went to the villages and asked the villagers to take shelter in the rehabilitation colonies, but they refused, citing absence of amenities.

Pulichintala project engineers said that water is reaching the reservoir from upstream and they would store only 11 tmc ft of water, and release the surplus.

District joint-collector Ch. Sridhar said that revenue, police and other departments are working overtime to ensure the safety of the villagers.

Mr Sridhar said that there are some issues about basic amenities in the rehabilitation colonies and officials are steps to resolve them.
