$83 million worth of Amazon’s Fire Phones unsold

Amazon, this year, unveiled their first, and possibly only, smartphone, the Fire Phone. The smartphone was one of the most awaited handsets of early 2014 where the company had managed to keep the details as secret as possible.

The news about the Fire Phone sporting six cameras was the most appealing information, which made the device even worth waiting for.

When the Fire Phone was finally launched by Amazon, the smartphone was known to feature six cameras, but four were for a different purpose—tracking.

The Amazon Fire Phone features a powerful chipset with a Snapdragon 800 having four processors buzzing at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 graphics processor. The rear primary camera is a 13MP and the front facing camera is a 2.1MP. Available in two variants, 32GB and 64GB storage options, the 4.7-inch Fire Phone with an HD display could virtually create a 3D environment with a 3D UI and wallpaper. The 3D user interface uses the remaining four cameras (one each on the corner of the front panel) for tracking the user’s face.

Surprisingly, the smartphone was not welcomed by many—it did not do well. According to ArsTechnica, Amazon has filed a net loss of a whopping $437 million, and the main reason was the newly launched smartphone.

Reports also stated that the Amazon Fire Phone was being sold as cheap as $0.99.

Presently, ArsTechnica reports that Amazon is presently sitting on almost $83 million worth of unsold Fire Phones. Amazon will also, possibly, try to get as many offers as possible, this holiday season, to cover up the losses.
