London: A China-based woman thief was stripped to the waist in public by a store owner as a punishment for trying to steal clothes, in eastern China's Zhejiang province.

The 39-year-old store owner, Mei Hsueh, said that she was simply handing out a punishment by making the 28-year-old Yu Chung topless, which prevented the thief from running away, the Mirror reported.

Hsueh added that this thief was trying to steal her clothes and so she took off some of hers, which will make her think twice before she does that again. Hsueh continued that it was meant to be a warning to all those thieves out there to show them that not all shops are a pushover.

The shop owner first pulled off the Chung's top and then wrenched her bra off her before pushing her into the street and making her beg for mercy. Spokesman Chi Tuan said that Chung has been charged with theft and no action is being taken against the shop owner.
