Gun goes off at National Police Academy, man hurt
The bullet pierced the right side of the victim’s body under his chest
Hyderabad: A plumber working at the National Police Academy was seriously injured when a CISF jawan mishandled a rifle and it fired accidentally on Tuesday evening.
The CISF constable, Debashish Chakra, claimed that he was bringing a .22 rifle to the NPA premises from the armoury located outside the campus, and that the trigger got pressed accidentally.
The bullet got stuck inside the victim’s body, and he was taken to a private hospital. Rajendra-nagar police booked a case for inflicting injury.
Police said the victim, Mohammed Habeeb, 44, was walking along with two other workers near the main gate of NPA when the incident occurred.
“The CISF constable and the victim were 50 metres apart. The constable was bringing the weapon inside through the right side of the gate. Suddenly the trigger got pressed and the bullet hit the victim,” said Rajendranagar police inspector S. Venkat Reddy.
The bullet pierced the right side of the victim’s body under his chest, hit his lung and got stuck inside. Habeeb was rushed to hospital, where he underwent a surgery. Doctors said he is recovering.
NPA officials said that the .22 rifle does not have a safety catch and the CISF constable could not handle the weapon properly. “In the initial inquiry we have not found any foul play in the incident. It seems to be purely accidental. We have launched an investigation into the matter after booking a case,” said inspector Venkat Reddy. The police has not arrested the CISF constable.
This is the second tragedy in the NPA campus. Earlier, an IPS trainee had drowned in the swimming pool during a party.
