Salem: Revenue department staff have demanded action against the superintendent of the Salem central prison for allegedly preventing the revenue staff from initiating work to construct a tahsildar’s office near the jail complex.Revenue staff from across Tamil Nadu gathered at the Salem collectorate on Wednesday and presented a petition to collector K. Maharabushanam demanding stern action against the prison department officials.
On Monday, when the revenue officials and staff tried to clean up the vacant land near the Salem jail complex located on Yercaud Road, the prison department SP and other jail officials prevented them from carrying out the work. While the prison officials claimed that the vacant land was part of the jail complex, the revenue department insisted that it had been earmarked for constructing the offices of the deputy superintendent of police, tahsildar and treasury department.
A row between the officials of the revenue and prison department followed and the work came to a halt. Angry revenue officials lodged a police complaint against the prison SP. However, a little later, on the advice of senior district officials, the complaint was withdrawn. But the Tamil Nadu revenue officials association has jumped into the fray now, demanding action against the prison officials. “Departmental action has to be initiated against the prison department officals for preventing revenue officials from carrying out their duties,” said C. Chandrasekaran, state vice-president of the Tamil Nadu revenue staff association.
The association has also demanded that the tahsildar’s office should come up on the land as it had already been approved by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
