Chennai: Opposition unity got a fillip on Wednesday with MDMK general secretary Vaiko welcoming DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin’s wish to have a broader alliance against the ruling AIADMK.

“I will be glad if Stalin wished for an alliance with my party,” Mr Vaiko told reporters after meeting the DMK leader in the reception of PMK leader and former Union minister Anbumani Ramadoss’s daughter Samyuktha at Mamallapuram.

The meeting between two leaders came against the background of talks about a possible political realignment in run up to the 2016 assembly polls.
After meeting Mr Stalin, the MDMK leader said that he was happy about meeting “brother” Stalin and he also enquired about health of DMK chief Karunanidhi. “This meeting has set an example for how to maintain political etiquette,” he said.

Even though the MDMK leader had played down talks of possibility of immediate political realignment, Mr Vaiko who is an ally BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre, in a party meeting last month praised the previous DMK regime led by Mr Karunanidhi.

DMK chief who never misses an opportunity to revive a tie up, highlighted Mr Vaiko’s gesture and Stalin reciprocated the spirit when he said, “he admired Vaiko’s tireless work for Tamils.”

PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss also praised Mr Karunanidhi for protecting the tradition of maintaining cordial relationship with opposition political parties. The PMK has been going soft on the DMK which is reciprocated by the Karunanidhi-led party.

In a televison interview, Stalin praised Ramadoss as the “first” person to urge that he be made the deputy CM when the DMK was in power.
