CoimbatoreThe Rural Development and Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani inspected rain ravaged areas in Coimbatore on Friday.

As the continuous rains have left the Ukkadam bypass road battered, the vehicle riders are forced to take a risky journey. SP Velumani, who noticed the potholed road, directed the officials to repair it soon.

As water stagnates in pits, the motorists are finding it extremely difficult to use the stretch. “Proper drains should be created,” he said in a release.

The minister told the Public Works Department to frequently remove blocks that prevent flow of water to Big Tank in Ukkadam. Further excess water from Sinthamanikulam and Muthannakulam should be diverted to Big Tank.

Road laying works on the bunds of Big Tank should be stepped up, so that it could be used as an alternative pathway, when flyover works begin at Aathupaalam junction. Mr SP Velumani also inspected the desilting works undertaken in ‘Rajavaikal’ for 1.5 kilometres at a cost of Rs 25 lakhs.

“Officials should ensure that sewage water doesn’t get mixed up with excess water that flows out of Singanallur Tank through Rajavaikal to Pattinam and Ondipudur areas. As this water is beneficial for farmers in doing agriculture, the sewage water should be let only after treatment,” he said.

The minister also inspected flooded ravaged areas in Koundampalayam Jeeva Nagar, besides Sakthi Road and Kurichi lake. The minister was accompanied by District Collector Archana Patnaik, Corporation Mayor P Rajkumar and other officials.

Later, SP Velumani also held a meeting with officials of various departments and got to know on various rain related damages in the district.
