Chennai: A 10-year-old boy’s unusual habit of swinging from a cloth tied around his neck turned fatal at his home in Tirumangalam on Saturday. K. Saravanan, a student of class 5 at a corporation school, lived with his father Kannan, a truck driver, and sister, Shoba (12), at Valliammai Nagar in Thirumangalam. On Saturday, around 1 pm, the boy was alone in the house when the incident happened. “He used his father’s towel to tie the rope swing in his house and play with it,” an investigating official said.
The family had told the police personnel that the boy was in the habit of playing in this manner in spite of many warnings from them. He climbed on to the bed and tied a knot around the swing ropes, which was at a height of eight feet, and was playing when he got strangulated, the police said.

His sister, who was outside, rushed on hearing his cries and alerted the neighbours who brought the boy down.He was rushed to a private hospital nearby where he died later in the evening. The Thirumangalam police moved his body to Kilpauk medical college hospital for a post-mortem. They said there were no suspicious circumstances to the boy’s death; it was a case of the boy’s playfulness going wrong.
