Coimbatore: The police arrested six persons from Chinnathadagam on Saturday for abetting the suicide of a 27-year-old man by calling him a thief. They said S. Suresh, a daily wage labourer from Chinnathadagam, committed suicide by consuming poison on Friday night.
Trouble began when Suresh went on a trek with his neighbourhood friends, S. Vellingiri, 23, K. Karuppusamy, 25, C. Devaraj, 27, K. Selvaraj alias Vincent, 50, M. Prasad, 23, and S. Suriya, 23, all daily wage labourers, to a stream.
On reaching the Sivasamy Sengal Kalvai, one among the friends found that '500 kept in his wallet had gone missing. "On suspicion, they checked Suresh and found the money with him. They also assaulted him. On their return at night, Suresh went home, depressed and humiliated," the police said.
The police said Suresh committed suicide by consuming poison, locking himself inside the toilet of his house the same night. Following a complaint from his wife Pavithra, the Thudiyalur police registered a case and enquiries revealed that Suresh took the extreme step because of humiliation by his friends. The six persons were arrested under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide) and were remanded in custody.
