Google to be taxed by news agencies
The new law will help in protecting the print media industry
According to a new copyright law passed by the Spanish government, news agencies in Spain will be able to charge Google for displaying news links on the search engine. Media reports state that this law will help in protecting its print media industry in Spain.
The newly introduced IP law is known as Google Tax or LPI. Reports state that it requires services, which post links and excerpts of news articles to pay a fee to the organisation representing Spanish newspapers, the Association of Editors of Spanish Dailies (known by its Spanish-language abbreviation AEDE). Failure to pay up can lead to a fine of up to €600,000.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Google stated that Google News helps publishers bring traffic to their sites, by stating the fact that it encourages around 10 billion views to newspapers’ websites every month.
Paying a monthly fee to media agenicies has disappointed Google as a whole.
