Nizamabad: Prevailing drought conditions have forced the people, particularly labourers to migrate from their native villages to towns in search of employment. Agriculture has come to a standstill  due to shortage of rainfall and power crisis in north Telangana districts. As a result, workers from Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar and neighbouring Nanded district in Maharashtra are forced to leave their native towns.

Nizamabad district headquarters is the largest hub for various jobs including construction labour. Nehru Park is famous for ‘adda labour’ where work is available on  daily wage basis. Hundreds of workers, including women, throng this place in search of work.

The district is reeling under drought conditions after having  received only 478.7mm rainfall as against 953.9mm. Kharif crops have been damaged in several parts of the district. There is no clarity on sowing crops in the rabi season too.

Speaking to this newspaper, N. Ramulu (name changed) of Desaipet village in Banswada mandal said that he had sown crops in three acre instead of six acre.  “For last three days I have been staying in Nizamabad looking for work,” he said.

This correspondent was confronted by farmers at Nehru Park. Women labourers asked for construction or domestic work.
