No dumping in Mandur: BBMP

Alternative arrangements made to carry 1,200 MT of garbage to other sites from December 1

BENGALURU: With the November 30 deadline approaching, the BBMP authorities claim that it has made alternative arrangements to dump 1,200 Metric Tonnes (MT) of garbage. They have  given an assurance that garbage will not be dumped at Mandur.

After the recent protests by the villagers of Mandur spearheaded by freedom fighter H. S. Doreswamy, the BBMP and state government set themselves a deadline. They have identified a few alternatives to dump the garbage produced in Bengaluru.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, district in-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy reiterated that as promised, garbage will not be sent to Mandur, instead it will be diverted to other  places.

Sharing the plans on diversion of garbage dumping, he said that Ms. MSGP at Chigaranahalli in Doddabballapur, Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) at Bommanahalli and Mavallipura at Yelahanka. Already, about 150 MT of waste is being diverted to MSGP, where a waste processing plant has been set up.

About 500 MT will be sent to KCDC where the garbage will be converted into compost and about 300 MT of waste can be sent to Mavallipura. Terrafirma can take about 300 MT of waste and process, he said.

Organic Waste India Ltd. has set up a plant at Mandur with a capacity to process about 300 MT of waste on daily basis, he added.Sources in BBMP said as per the high court directive, the BBMP is planning to set up processing units at all the constituency levels.

Later, waste generated in Mahadevapura zone would be sent to Mandur for processing.

Even the high court has given permission for the civic body BBMP to set up organic waste processing units and accept the garbage both at Mavallipura and Mandur.

Besides, bio-methanisation plants have been set up at some wards to reduce dumping of waste at landfills. Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels’ Association (BBHA) is setting up a plant at Kannahallli over five acres to process 250 MT of wet waste, said sources.

Wet waste to methane gas units, each with 5 MT capacity, have been set up at KR Market, Jayanagar, KCDC, Varthur and Begur Main Road. Sataram Enterprises Limited, with a capacity of 1,000 MT has been planned at Gorur village in Ramanagar district, where villagers protested recently.
