Hyderabad: The Telangana government will take back lands from Central research institutes and other organisations that were given lands decades ago to establish facilities, but are lying unused. This decision of the government is considered to be a part of its plan to decongest the city and make the lands available for state government needs.

One of the institutes to be affected by this is the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, near Tarnaka. IICT was given about 6363 sq.mt (1.572 acres) of land within Nampally revenue limits for the extension of its research and development facility. This is located near Narayanguda, abutting BJR Government Junior College, and is surrounded by many other structures.

However, now the government feels that the land should be put to better use. “The government feels that the land can be put to better use to expand the BJR Junior College,” said an official at the Hyderabad Collectorate office.

“Since the land is in the core city area, the government plans to retrieve it and give another site to IICT within Greater Hyderabad limits,” said a source.
