Two suspected murders and a rape have taken place in the last three years

Chennai: A maid employed in the house of a  cardio thoracic surgeon was arrested for the armed robbery at his house in Anna Nagar (east) Tuesday afternoon.

Two men barged into the house of Dr.R.Anandan, a surgeon at M.R.Hospital, Arumbakkam at 4 pm Tuesday and holding three women, including the maid, at gunpoint  made away with 75 sovereigns of gold and Rs 3.5 lakh in cash after tying them up. “They  asked for the locker key and escaped with the jewellery and cash, but did not harm any of the women,” said a senior police officer.

The daylight robbery was all the more shocking as Dr Anandan lived with his family in Q block, 15th street, a few hundred meters  from the Anna Nagar police station.

 The doctor found  the women tied up on returning from work an hour later and informed the police. Within  minutes of the investigation, the 29 -year- old maid, Hazeema Begum’s involvement in the robbery was confirmed.  “She claimed that her husband was in West Bengal, but the tower location of his phone confirmed his presence in the city and after this needle of suspicion fell on her,” said a senior police officer.
