THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy  on Wednesday said the Vigilance had already initiated a quick verification (QV) into the bribe allegations against Finance Minister K.M. Mani and that  there was, therefore,  no need for a CBI inquiry.

At the cabinet briefing, Mr Chandy said the QV was ordered following Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan’s  letter demanding a Vigilance probe.

“Now he has a change of mind. But I cannot change my stand according to his whims and fancies,’’ he added.
When asked about Mr Mani’s allegation regarding a conspiracy, the chief minister said,  “If anyone feels that way, then they should come out with specific complaints.’’

Reacting to the charge that he  had gained  politically as he wanted to prevent Mr Mani’s entry into the LDF, Mr Chandy said, “Will Pinarayi say that they are ready to take Mani? All these controversies are being raked up to obstruct the positive developments taking place in the state,’’ he said.

“The UDF will remain united and the Opposition attempts to create a rift would prove futile,” he added.
When asked about Mr Mani’s allegation that some people within the UDF were trying to defame him, Mr Chandy said,  “Mani is not only Kerala Congress leader but  also the UDF’s seniormost leader. That respect has always been given and will be given,’’ he added.
