Woman sells daughter for Rs 1 lakh, held
Police made her confess that she had sold the baby to a grocery shop owner
Chennai: A twenty-five-year old woman was arrested for allegedly selling her girl child for Rs 1 lakh, and later, enacting a drama by filing a missing complaint at Royapuram police station on Thursday.
Mahalakshmi, 25, of Singaravelan Nagar, Kasimedu, wife of fisherman Muthu approached Washermenpet police on Wednesday evening, claiming that her two-month-old daughter Jennifer went missing when she went to the government Stanley hospital with her aunt to purchase medicine. “She even said that she handed over the baby to a woman standing next to her as she was finding it difficult to hold her. The woman later vanished with the child,” she stated in her complaint.
Police however, during their questioning, made her confess that she had sold the baby to a grocery shop owner Muthu Krishnan in the same locality.
One of her relatives, Desapattu, 48, (an aunt of Mahalakshmi) had mediated the sale, police said. When police probed the case further they found that Muthu Krishnan had sold the baby for Rs 2 lakh to a childless couple in Royapettah and had taken Rs 1 lakh as commission. Police traced the couple and the child on Thursday.
Muthu Krishnan told police that a month ago, a woman from Royapettah had approached him, saying that her daughter, married for 13 years, has no child and the family was ready to take any child for adoption after paying a good sum.
Muthu Krishnan conspired with Desapattu, who in turn convinced Mahalakshmi to sell the baby. “We have arrested Muthu Krishnan and Desapattu. We are also conducting enquiries with the couple from Royapettah who had ‘purchased’ the child,” police noted.
