Movie review 'Thirudan Police': An entertaining thriller with a smidgen of comedy
Caarthick Raju has intermingled two different narratives which takes the audience on a thrill ride
For a debut directorial venture, Caarthick Raju’s Thirudan Police is a commendable end product that manages to prop itself up as an entertaining thriller with a smidgen of comedy mixed in.
The overall story is rather run of the mill, with the dutiful father (Rajesh) who worships his job as a police officer and the good-for-nothing son Vishwa (Dinesh) who squanders his time in petty foibles. When the father gets KIA, the son is given a spot in the police squad as a constable and a chance at redemption. As the movie unrolls further, one gets to see Vishwa track down the killers of his father in hopes of extracting revenge.
What does set the movie apart from the usual fare is the skilful way in which Caarthick Raju has intermingled two different narratives which takes the audience on a thrill ride as Vishwa’s extracts justice as a cop - one of Vishwa’s present as he tracks down the killers and the other of the past that Vishwa reminisces about and realizes the kind of man his father was that he never got to know.
Throw in some unexpected moments of comedy from the antagonists (played by John Vijay and Rajendran) and some interesting commentary from Vishwa’s side kick (Bala Saravanan) and the movie works its way onto a rowdy climax that leaves a silly grin on the audience’s faces. Dinesh still has Cuckoo hangover, but is convincing as a simple policeman.
Ishwarya Rajesh has nothing much by way of performance, but looks pleasant and is there for few romantic tracks. Vijay Sethupathi appears in an item-number. SPB in a cameo impresses. Yuvan’s background score goes well with the mood of the film.
