Rameswaram:The wives of five fishermen, who were given death sentences by the Sri Lankan Government, began a fast at Thangachimadam on Saturday, demanding their release. The five, who were arrested by the Lankan Government in a drug smuggling case, had been iimprisoned for three years. The news of their death sentence recently had led to several protests also by fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s coastal areas.
Now, however, upon the Indian government’s insistence, the Lankan Government is taking steps towards their release.
Jenita, wife of Prasad, one of the fishermen, said, “We are being told that the Lankan Government is taking steps to release them, but we have not received any official intimation yet.”
The women withdrew their protest in the evening after Ramanathapuram district RDO Ramapradheepan assured them that they would get the news about their release in three days’ time.
