New Delhi: In the BJP’s “Mission Bengal,” the saffron forces have begun matching the Trinamul’s muscle power. In the last few months, there have been over 400 clashes between the ruling Trinamul and the BJP in the state, with the maximum being reported from Birbhum district.
What is worrying the Trinamul is that Muslims are also shifting towards the BJP. The state BJP leadership has claimed that over 1.75 lakh Muslims have joined the party.
Over the last few months, Birbhum has emerged as the epicentre of clashes between the BJP and Trinamul workers. While three people have been killed so far, scores of others have been injured in clashes which have now become a regular feature in various villages in Birbhum district.
Some feel that the BJP, , was being able to “stand up to the Trinamul’s muscle power” as a large number of CPM and Congress workers are moving towards saffron forces. Sources revealed that some villages in Birbhum district have become BJP strongholds and Trinamul workers were trying to take back lost territories.
For instance, a major clash happened on October 27 in a village under Panrui police station in Birbhum district. After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had moved in to take control of the village. Interestingly, Birbhum is a Muslim dominated region. Alarm bells have begun to ring as the Muslims in these areas have started moving towards the BJP.
The BJP, which is eyeing Bengal, is preparing to contest at least 150 of the 294 seats during the Assembly polls in 2016. However, Bengal watchers even in the BJP feel that this could be a “Herculean task”.
