Knife wielding man attacks police officers on road
Investigations revealed that the accused was under the influence of drugs

Coimbatore: A man, wielding a knife, attacked two cops who summoned him for an inquiry on seeing him roaming about in a suspicious manner in Ukkadam on Sunday. The two cops, SSI Surendar of Big Bazaar police station and SSI Johee of Variety Hall road station, suffered stab injuries and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.
According to the police, the two cops were involved in a vehicle check on the Aathupalam-Ukkadam road when they noticed a man roaming around in a restless manner.
“SSI Johee, acting on suspicion, called him and inquired where he was from when he unexpectedly took out a knife and began to attack him. The other cop, Surendar, also received stab injuries when he attempted to save his colleague.
The accused then began to attack passers-by and those who came to the policemen’s rescue. A youth, identified as Karthi, 24, from Kuniamuthur, who came forward to nab the culprit, also suffered stab injuries,” the police said.
A group of locals managed to overpower the accused and seize the knife from him. They also thrashed him severely before handing him over to the Big Bazaar police station.
Investigations revealed that the accused, Prabhakaran, 25, from Housing Unit in Kurichi, was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack. “Prabhakaran suffered injuries in the attack by the locals and was admitted to the Coimbatore medical college and hospital for treatment. He is still under the influence of drugs and hasn’t revealed any further details,” the police said.
The two SSIs who suffered injuries are under treatment at private hospitals. The incident, which occurred in a crowded area, sent shock waves among the people. The police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
