Hyderabad: Seven years have passed since the government acquired 733 acres of land in Uppal Bhagat but farmers are yet to get compensation. The land was acquired for the Musi beautification project and Hyderabad Metro Rail.

While 104 acres were for the Metro Rail depot in Nagole, 150 acres were given to the Water Board for a sewage treatment plant. Both had agreed to pay Rs 25 lakh per acre for development of plots in the remaining 413-acre layout to be allotted to the farmers.

The government promised a 1,000-square yard developed plot for every acre of land acquired, within 18 months. The market price at the time was Rs 30,000 per sq. yard. The plots were developed, but the government has not handed them over.

“Who will trust the government?” asked Uppal legislator N.V.S.S. Prabhakar. He raised the matter in the ongoing Assembly session but did not get a convincing reply.
Mr Prabhakar said that about 99 acres in Ramanthapur Bhagat was acquired by HMDA. However, it has not done anything with the land.

“Nearly 4,000 families were living there for decades. The Chief Minister assured that poor people will be given pattas. We demand that he direct HMDA to denotify these lands,” Mr Prabhakar said.

Farmers in Uppal Bhagat are planning to hold demonstrations in front of the Metro Rail depot demanding compensation.
