Bengaluru: A volunteer group, Ugly Indian, which aims to make the city a better place to live, literally made a song and dance about cleanliness in the underpasses by organising a music concert. But the BBMP is yet to learn its lessons.

Mayor N. Shanthakumari, who inspected underpasses across the city, slammed BBMP engineers for lack of maintenance of pedestrian subways and set a week’s deadline to call for tenders to take up repair and maintenance works.

Following several complaints, the mayor inspected the underpasses at Rajajinagar (Sujata Theater), City Railway station and SJP near K.R Circle. Appalled by the condition, she questioned the engineers why the subways were so untidy.

The subway near Sujata Theatre was dark, smelly and lacked safety measures. “Pedestrians hesitate to use these subways because they are dirty. The city needs well-maintained subways as pedestrians don’t have space to walk on roads. If you maintain them, pedestrians will eventually use these subways,” she told the officials.

Noticing that the toilet near City Railway Station subway was in a dilapidated condition, she instructed the officials to immediately close the building. She observed that since the drainage system was faulty, the entire subway stank. Directing the engineers to pump out the sewage that was flowing into the subway, she ordered them to complete the works within a week.

At the SJP subway, she was impressed with the revamp work done by The Ugly Indian (TUI) and said it could be a model for other pedestrian underpasses.

In KR Market subway too, the mayor noticed that rain water was getting accumulated, preventing pedestrians from using it. “The market is in the Central Business District and attracts a large floating population. How can this subway in such a shoddy condition? We need to find a permanent solution and ensure that water does not get accumulated. BWSSB and BBMP should solve this problem,” she said.
